THE SILENT DISEASE

Depression
It is a medical illness that negatively affects how you feel think and also the way you act.

Depression among University students in Kenya
Depressive illness is common among the first year students, those who are economically disadvantaged and those living off campus. Statistics shows that those students who used tobacco, engaged in party life and those who had an older age are more likely to be depressed.

 Factor that accelerate depression
A lack of sleep, poor eating habits, and not enough exercise are a reason for depression among college students. The stress that comes with life in and out of school— including financial worries, pressure to get a good job after school, and failed relationships — is enough to force some students to leave college or even worse.

The risks and consequences of depression among students
Many students are unprepared for university life.
Today’s students face high debt.
They also have fewer job prospects after graduation than previous generations. These added concerns can lead to depressive episodes in college students.

Depressed students are at a greater risk of developing problems such as substance abuse. Depressed college students are more likely to smoke marijuana, live a party life in school and participate in risky sexual behaviors to cope with emotional pain.
